The Duke of Crydee is a title in the Kingdom of the Isles. It is given to the ruler of the Duchy of Crydee. The Duke of Crydee is a prestigious title in the Kingdom of the Isles, bestowed upon the ruler of the Duchy of Crydee. As the head of the duchy, the Duke holds a position of power and authority, overseeing the governance and affairs of Crydee.

History[]

The title of Duke of Crydee has a rich history that dates back to the time of Nicholas conDoin, the grandfather of Borric III. It was Nicholas who expanded the Western Realm of the Kingdom of the Isles, annexing the former imperial province of Bosania and stopping just short of the Free Cities. This significant expansion earned Nicholas the title of Duke of Crydee, marking the beginning of a favorable relationship between the duchy and the Free Cities. Over the years, the Dukes of Crydee have maintained this positive relationship, treating the Free Cities fairly and even generously.

As the Duke of Crydee, the Duke's vassals include the Barons of Carse and Tulan. These barons, along with other influential figures in the duchy, assist the Duke in governing and managing the affairs of Crydee.

The title of Duke of Crydee holds great significance within the Kingdom of the Isles, as it is the third-highest ranking title, surpassed only by the Prince of Krondor and the King of the Isles. This places the Duke in a position of considerable authority and influence, not only within Crydee but also in the wider Kingdom.

Given Crydee's location on the western edge of the continent, the Duke of Crydee also carries the title of Warden of the West. This title emphasizes the Duke's responsibility for defending and protecting the Kingdom's western borders.

The heraldic banner of the Duke of Crydee features a golden gull, symbolizing the duchy's connection to the sea and its maritime importance. Above the gull, there was historically a small golden crown, representing the Duke's status as a member of the royal house. However, when Martin Longbow became Duke, the golden crown was removed, potentially symbolizing a departure from traditional royal ties and a focus on the duchy's unique identity.
